Well, well well - what do you know - last week Maylands was in the top 10 Perth suburbs for suburban lifestyle by realsestate.com.au and now one of the 'coolest' neighborhoods in Australia by Lonely Planet. I know some Perth people are bewildered by this accolade, perhaps raised their botox eyebrows and scoffed into their chardonnay, but for us locals its nothing new. Maylands is cool, its the diverse mix of people that form the community that make it so - this isnt a wealthy clean homogeneous suburb by any means, its home to a thriving indian population, eclectic mix of passionate business owners, welcoming gay community (now even more gay since the postal vote results...... in an old fashioned way), roaming original australians, very colourful degenerates and a tonne of religious buildings from every faith including the home of the Islamic Centre of WA. Ive travelled all over Australia and sure there are many super cool suburbs just like or even better than Maylands but hey, let us enjoy this for a little while.

Now the secrets out - the gentrification train will no doubt gain a little more momentum, i just hope those turning up have the welcoming open minded attitude to life and that 'we' (community) dont turn into a bunch of cool wankers.
