3 Over / 4 Under - FINESPUN Presentation

Architecture Week  is an annual event which provides various events for the public to engage with the world of architecture. Most of the time its architects checking out what other architects are up to and having a few drinks. But rest assured the non-architectural public are very much welcome..... That said we are part of the 4 under crew (those emerging practices, not yet old or wise enough to be in the 'over' bracket), and yes its free and a good insight into built world and thankfully organised by MERGE, sponsored by NORTHERLY and held at The Bakery in Northbridge on the 24th of Oct starting around 530-600. See you there....

Maylands - The WA Home of Culture

Well well well, Maylands aint you a cultured thing....  first the WA Ballet arrived at the wonderfully restored building (formerly the WA Institute for the Blind) on Whatley Cres by Griffiths Architects, and now the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra have recently landed the tenancy at the historic Maylands Town Hall on Guildford Road (formerly the Maylands Library). Both historically significant and beautiful buildings with deserving tenants, not to mention we also have Dome's Headquarters in the wonderful old Penninsula Hotel up the road from us.

Whats next? Perhaps we can get the The WA Symphany Orchestra out of the city and into Maylands - 'The new WA Home of Culture'. They could do Friday night 'Skimpies & Symphonies' at the Penninsula Tavern. Some would argue they are both great art forms on their own accord.....

Rendezvous at Scarborough?

We had a 'rendezvous' at Scarborough's infamous landmark building which is getting a ground level make-over and new canopy works thanks to Gresley Abas. All tenancies are now taken and this is the view from the tenancy we are looking at inserting a Small Bar into. I think most locals would agree its about time this beachfront was taken back. Im not sure where all the burnouts and 'f*ck off were full' stickers will go now? Although if it does what i think it will do to the area (can Scarborough be gentrified?), i will miss the odd bogan swimming in jeans..... bah! Lets hope there something in between dodginess and gentrification where bogans and bourgeois can live in harmony.

Murdoch University Vet Hospital

Is your Rhino not feeling well? Your horse walking with a limp? Or perhaps your pig ate the dog? The team at Murdoch Uni Veterinary Hospital can help! Added to this, is the new building extension we helped create, to house the state of the art equine (or small rhino) capable CT Scanner complete with a 2 tonne hoist for those larger animals! They also use the hospital for teaching and I hear there is a 6 week documentary currently airing on ABC1 called 'Vet School' which features the facilities in action.

Maylands - the new Mt Lawley?

Us who live / work here in Maylands knew it already, but now its been officially recognised by Lonely Planet's latest edition of Perth & West Coast of Australia Travel Guide as being the next big thing in Perth;

"If the recent expansion of new bars, cafes and restaurants in Mt Lawley makes the suburb the 'new Subiaco', we reckon Maylands just to the east could be the 'new Mt Lawley."

Im not quite sure if they got that right, im quite certain we shouldn't be following in the footsteps of Mt Lawley with high rents and retailers moving elsewhere, and im sure the Mt Lawley crew wouldn't like the Subiaco model in their suburb either...... nonetheless the news is positive for Maylands.

Where else can you stumble around on the weekend, pick up your coffee, continental roll and ammo for your gun? Thumbs up to all the land and business owners who continue to support the area.
