We have moved! Down the road and across the tracks from our ole' shed/studio and are now opposite the Maylands train station in Shop 213 Railway Pde next to The East Salon and Blackcurrant Clothing. The shed / studio can now return to its use as a drum studio, kids playroom and football watching room. We are now open for business and ready for your next interesting project - um well not right now as we are a little busy but you get the drift.......
Yes i know, everyone is doing a pre-fab these days, but we're thinking more along the lines of a kit home (3 bed + study / 2 baths) that comes in pieces delivered in a sea container and can be installed in 3 hours! Im only kidding, its just another weekender but we're trying to work backwards from standard sheet sizes of steel studs, external & internal cladding sheets so there is no cutting, no waste and no frills..... maybe the front door will be blue.
A rumour floating around the Maylands community is that we might be moving out of the trusty Shed, and into a Shopfront. This is entirely TRUE and we cant wait to get amongst the other fine businesses popping up around our neighbourhood. There is another rumour we may put on an opening party 'sundowner' for the local businesses, for a chance to introduce everyone and strengthen the community spirit....... what am i saying, its really about free beer and wine!
Ive been reading a bit of Buckminster Fuller's early writings. He was a designer, inventor, architect, futurist and one of the first advocates of enovironmental protection. He loved geometry, and you would know some of his work with geodesic domes and perhaps this map known as the Dymaxion Map. It depicted the entire planet on a single flat map without visible distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the continents. It had no right side up, given he wanted viewers to be able view the planet as one continuous land mass. The shape folds into an icosahedron. This may lead you on to looking up his Jitterbug Geometry, a transformative shape connected to sacred geometry and the building blocks of the universe...... to be continued.
In Norse mythology, Thor (the God of Thunder) is characterised through his distinctively shaped hammer called 'Mjölnir' (pronounced MYOL-n(ee)r) which is depicted in Norse mythology as one of the most fearsome weapons, capable of leveling mountains...... I think we found it right here in North Fremantle at our measure up of the Town Hall for the next install of separate restaurant and another bar. The building really is a beauty! Don't worry, the Town Hall wont be touched, as we are reinvigorating the unused spaces around it, especially the outdoor spaces which are perfect for the Perth climate.
Well, 2013 is running already. Where did the break go? I will miss my spare time for reading - Tom Robbins always makes life seem better. Get your hands on his books, they are like a sunshower in autumn or three Coopers red stubbies on a sunny Sunday.
It got me thinking more about themes which are always present in his books, one is his disdain for the mediocre, and the other to not take life so seriously and lighten up more. Both of which i will try to use throughout 2013 in architecture.
Just in case the world ends - we have issued our Xmas Card and Annual wrap up early.... check it out here
Running a small practice combined with family life can sometimes result in the housekeeping going astray. But yes, we finally got around to updating our website - thanks to Lab Fiftyfive. Take a look around, we are trying to upload new photos of our projects and you can keep an eye on the progress of some of the new ones via our journal. Thanks for visiting!
