Interesting times hey? First of all, dont be a dickhead and hoard stuff. In fact the more you hoard, the more valuable your property is and we all know where Mad Max ended up - those motorcycle dudes will surround your property and barge down your door. Although to be honest, im a little keen to see where we can take those rigged up vehicles.
Speaking of rigged up vehicles, The FINESPUN Van is my version born two years ago - i would love nothing more than adding armour and installing a flamethrower on the roof.
I spent my youth traveling the globe. As such i've lived in vans much of my life. The FINESPUN van (@the_finespun_van) is the fourth van ive occupied, but surprisingly the first one ive ever converted on my own.
I tried the work-life balance - not very good at that. I enjoy working and life too much to balance either one, so im suggesting a new model - the 'work-life blur'. When you enjoy your work and your life just as much that they tend to blur into each other. For me, offices are so 1990s.
So do as rebels will, i ditched our bricks and mortar architecture studio 2 years ago with a rumbling idea (some may call it a mid-life crisis!) to rid myself of the four walls we call Office...... I mean why-not - its the future - we should be able to CAD telepathically by now, instead of clicking and typing away on primitive devices..... pfff!
I thought, what if we spent the next years Office rent on a personal project such as a van conversion which has the potential to capture some of my youthful traveling days, my love of the outdoors, constant change and combine all of this together in my day to day working life?
The FINESPUN van is the result of this thinking. A ex courier Mercedes Sprinter mid wheel base high roof van. What was to be last years rent, paid off the fitout of the van - a mobile office equipped head to tow with everything a small architectural office needs; meeting zone, creative drawing zone, kitchenette, music, coffee, beer in 12V fridge and all completely powered by the sun. The whole van is powered on 2 x 200W panels stored in 2 x 120A AGM batteries. My gear plugs into all this and we connect to the internet via a 12 volt router with two sim card slots and long range antennae for extended out of range trips. Water is stored internally and attached to pumps and filters and the whole van converts to a double bed when you're ready to lie down.....
The FINESPUN van now allows me to capture moments of 'me-time' during my working week - early morning surf / swims dont feel so guilty. Those spare moments in between meetings i make the most of, under a shady tree with a nice view and respond to emails, take video calls and sketch away. Site meetings in the van are now regular occurance, much quieter than a noisy construction site.
As a small remote team we use tools like BLRT (an app which enables you to mark up PDFs, record your voice and send to team members) and Zoom / Skype for video calls. Our project files are all cloud based and synchronised locally on our computers. Its not perfect but will continue to evolve.
