Southcamp - Stage 1 OPEN

Look out friends down south.

Southcamp (Stage 1) is now open.... which means the Brewery, Kitchen and Courtyard is ready for punters to enjoy.

Our small team are very proud of this project - we put our heart and soul into projects like this, especially when the landowner (Atzemis Family), development manager (Place Development) and the operators (Miles Hull and Michael Forde) are sincerely involved in getting behind us and making the most out of such a project - we thank them for it.

The core foundation of this project was to be as senstive as possible to the existing land and the existing flora and fauna ccontained within. It wasnt easy and often a hard battle to maintain this course when the easy way is to clear and level the landscape and start again.... im grateful for the builders (Perkins - Base Build) and HOSKINS (Fitout) and all their associated trades who helped us realise this vision.

Big thanks to the Project Team; Scott and Associates (Structural), FOCUS WA (Electrical), IONIC (Hydraulic), LINK (Mechanical), EMERGE (Landscape), Traffic / Civil (Stantec), BCA / Compliance (RESOLVE Group), Gabriels (Acoustic) - and last but never least Marcos Prado and Jennifer Vos who have excelled once again.

Gage Roads Brew Co Freo - A Year On

Its been more than a year down at the historic A Shed with Gage Roads Brew Co. - the trustworthy custodians of the 100 year old timber shed structure that they now call home.

What a year they have had, and it seems like its not slowing down - this is now on the hit list of places to take your interstate relatives to watch the sunset and watch a container ship roll in..... the view out of the building to the water though those cantilever doors is the perfect experience for this building.

We have been working with Gage Roads on some much needed upgrades (shade structures and additional cooking facilities) to better serve the customers..... as always we are delighted to work through these additions with the Heritage Council WA to ensure they are fit for purpose, suit the historical context and improve the experience to this iconic destination - as such the new shade structure is now up and running to provide more coverage to the west end.

More to come on this front to make the user experience even better.

Lawson Flats - Open for Business (and Pleasure)

Lawson Flats is a new-wave members club in the heart of the Perth CBD.

Spread across three floors of a historic 100 year old art deco apartment building and continues the legacy of the Karakatta Club who used to call these levels home. Lawson Flats boasts co-working spaces, a gym and sauna, karaoke and music rooms, plus an all-day cafe and restaurant.

The mob pictured above are a group of many talents who we collaborated with on this project - this was another fun project with FINI Group - and included the visionary design lead from Jen Lowe from OHLO Studio and built by Aurora Project Group.

Its a unique building and a unique space - and once again proves that adaptive re-use is vital in keeping historical fabric alive for future generations to enjoy. Im really proud of the new wave of Perth developers like Alessio Fini that have the vision to see the great value in older building stock and their retention and reuse. They are tough projects to navigate but always worth it in the end.

Southcamp Cabins - Dunsborough Accommodation

Perth people know the drill. Hey honey, how about we go down south this weekend. Great idea - ill look around for accommodation'. Spend 4 hours looking at expensive crap and decide not to leave Perth. Feel disgusted at yourself that you spent that much time 'again' and achevied nothing. Its one of the reasons i build the van to sleep in......

Well - in an attempt to assist the accommodation crisis we've done our bit with the upcoming Cabins to be installed at Southcamp - https://www.southcamp.com.au

These are situated at the rear of the property and in close proximity to the creek line. The whole development has been an attempt to work with the natural topography, existing trees and put people closer to nature but put nature first. More green - less mean.

The Standard Cabins are 14.2m2 plus an additional Deck area - the goal was to make such a small space feel warm, cosy, natural and a little bit luxurious. Pictured above is the prototype so they are not all ready yet but cant wait to see them land on site and punters kicking back on the deck.

PS. I still recommend building a van that you can sleep in......

Its that time of year.....  2022 was super charged alright and i just managed to hold on.......

Adaptive Reuse Heritage Awards 2022

A year ago, we were racing for the finish line to have the Gage Roads Freo venue ready for summer opening - the 100 year old timber wharf shed was coming back to life. Im usually not one for awards - but it was great to see this project shortlisted amongst many and then receive a commendation in the Conservation or Adaptive Reuse category.

The Heritage Council WA Awards are now in the 30th year - which is super. Its great to see such renewed interest from developers in heritage, history and culture and what adaptive re-use projects can bring to a development. Just like people, older buildings have wrinkles, scars and stories - this passage through time creates character...... you cant build that.

FINCH Bar

The news is out. FINCH Bar is on the run. We cant say too much other than Euro Disco.

You might ask what is Euro Disco?

Well so did i...... Unfortunately im not of the partying age (dont worry i gave it a full nudge in my younger years....). But the terms Euro and Disco were met with deep dissapointment in my dancing days (Side Note: No offense to my beautiful European (Macedonian) wife - you are the opposite of dissapointment..... appointment??)

So the idea here is to create a welcoming, comfortable yet unique space for folk to moderately take part in all things late night.... this includes drinking, dancing, eating and talking - all in moderation and without any specfic focus. All the while high clarity dance themed music (often in different languages) permeates your ears.

We are hoping FINCH Bar provides this atmosphere - its small and intimate but a place where Northbridge can be left to Northbridge.

Victoria House - On the Home Stretch

Victoria House in Shenton Park is on the home stretch with PACT Construction. A mixed use project lead by Hesperia and delivered in conjunction with MJA Architects and Place Laboratory - this one has been a long time coming.

From our side we looked after the adaptive reuse portion of the former Shenton Park Rehabilition Hospital which has a very long history as a building which has taken care of people for almost 100 years.

The original building had been added, refurbished and remodelled over many eras, so the intent of our work was to remove much of the intrusive elements and reinstate the original fabric as best we could.

The building is in great shape for such an old building and we are looking forward to seeing this come to fruition - this has been a long term relationship from 2017.

VANLIFE - Origins of the Custom Van

I grew up my young years in the 70s and 80s...... I remember the first time i saw a custom Van magazine at the local newsagent. I flicked through it and put it back down - there was no money in my pocket - but there it was - everything i had ever dreamed of.

A mobile space you could craft as you pleased and then it could take you anywhere you wanted to go - surely that was the ticket out of western suburbs of Melbourne, i could avoid the Broadmeadows train line forever!? Well - i would have to wait another 10 years to get my drivers licence but you know what i mean.

Despite what recent years of social media portrays and current hipster take on Vanlife - this was going on 50 years ago - and to be honest, i think the van community of the 70s were much more creative, bolder, open to new ideas and each van was filled full of individual character.....

The custom van scene really took off in the early 70s and by the mid 1970s even car manufacturers were advertising to this niche. This is where the magazines picked up such as Custom Vans, Street Vans, Travelin Vans, Van Power, Van World and more - this website has it all covered and shows each magazine cover to boot: http://99wspeedshop.com.s3-website-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/customvans.html

The thing i loved about these magazines, there was no internet - so the only place to see what other people were doing was through print..... they showed you the latest custom van builds from around the world including those interiors, they had DIY tips and instructions for all sorts of custom work including how to airbrush your own art onto your van - how good are some of those exterior paint jobs! I think i even bought an air brush so i could practice......

That was 50 years ago!

Imagine the next custom van cycle in 30-50 years - im seeing electric hovering vans which clean the air as they move, body parts are grown rather than made and self repair after crashes, glazing which disappears at the push of a button, AI integrated driving consoles which tap into your conciousness - but as a nod to the past the exterior paint jobs and vintage interiors still exist as a craft on their own.

Cant wait!

The Construction Games

I think there's a movie in that title..... 'The Construction Games' - where we all compete to get projects built in a mildly violent manner.

Im not that far off..... for the first time in my career ive never seen this side of the construction industry - its a little ugly to be honest and ive found myself caught in the thick of it.

It was a cocktail of many ingredients - building grants schemes, labour shortages, material / supplier issues, COVID (actually) hitting Perth, contractural obligations and all round personal burn out trying to keep up - shake with some ice and pour into a tall glass.

Multiply that over every project and you get a little woozy....  unfortunately its not that type of party.

After a big night on the cocktails - i think we're all waking up to a slight hangover. Those inflation and interest rates on the increase will assist in a few months but not right now.

There are a few things we can all do on projects to assist the pain......

- be flexible: we're all in same boat, many things are out of our control

- be compassionate: we've all got a lot going on, yelling louder wont help.

- be kind: the way you talk and email people makes a huge difference to the way they respond to you.

- build relationships: when all this is over, we've still got to work with and rely on each other.

If it all turns to shit, then its time to park it, take some time out, shift careers and do something else.
