North Street Store x FINESPUN

OpenHousePerth

Ive always been a big fan of the North Street Store - unpretentious space with a fitout that was hand moulded by the owners. It just goes to show you, whilst fitout is important, its your service and product which people return to which make a successful venue.

Ive had the fortunate pleasure of getting to know Craig and Lachie this last year, they're good honest unpretentious folk (just like their food) with a slight socialist agenda which pleased me even more. Ive been helping them wade through the NIMBYism at the Cottesloe store and now a recent approval of a new venture down in our old favorite North Fremantle for Big Loaf ( bigloaf.com.au ) At the City of Fremantle Council meeting, there was very valid concern from adjoining residents and business owners on this proposal. The genuine concerns were targeted at parking (and lack of) in North Fremantle which has become a successful destination village.

Which in itself is ironic. The parking problem is an issue we helped create with the introduction of several venues; Mrs Brown, Flipside, Propellor and Guild Hall into the village - damn you FINESPUN you bloody wanker.

On a serious note, we will do our best to ensure this new addition feels just at home as the other venues.

Climate Strike - Are You Nuts?

ClimateStrike

I have no doubt that human existence and activity is having an environmental impact on this beautiful planet EARTH. You have to be nuts to think otherwise. You also have to be f#ckwit to think we are doomed - we already have the answers to our problems - its just a matter of business - oh and population control?

I really love nature, ive traveled the globe - it has given me the most memorable and life changing experiences i can recall, so i take offense to any activity which damages this beauty - simple really. My stance has nothing to do with 'climate change' but a deep appreciation of the unique-ness of our planet in this huge expanse of our solar system - and our future - which our younger kids who have no interest in material pursuit understand deeply

Take a peek through the writings of Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Jack London and others who revere nature and you will get a great sense of this emotion - better yet, get your ass out of the city and into the wilderness.

It is one of the reasons i ditched the conventional office and retreated to a mobile office in a converted van with a remote team. I hope the recent Climate Strike was not just some social media trend but a real mode of thinking. I hope those businesses (and architects) who declared allegiance to this climate emergency practice what they preach - not just sign a petition and attend a protest........ in the words of Henry - "what is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?"

But then again - theres always Plan B.....

Public Art

TonyJones-FINESPUN

You've walked past them many times. You're a bogan from the deep suburbs (just like me) and you think - what the f#ck is that? Dont worry its normal - its called 'public' art whether the public like it or not....

It can be a wall mural, a sculpture, a bent steel beam, a poetic passage for those who wish to read or anything else which falls into the realm of 'public' art. You may not like and you may say to yourself - what!~ i could do that. Maybe you could.

Ive just noticed Wikipedia has a page for 'public art in Perth' found here. Artwork such as Shimmer from Jurek Wybraniec and Stephen Neille in East Perth where i park my van and shoot hoops, Jon Tarry's work at the new Stadium and the wonderful C Y O'Connor work from Tony Jones.

You see, ive gotten to know many artists in my time in Perth and i admire all of their contribution. Take a wander through the list and make a day trip of it - you may just realise public art is actually for the public.... that includes bogans like me and you.

They Know How to Hustle in Bussel.... (ton),

FINESPUN SMC Marine Busselton Jetty

Did you know Busselton Jetty is the second longest wooden jetty in the world at 1841 meters long and is operated by a non-profit community organisation. All profits contribute to jetty maintenance and improvements. In fact, Busselton Jetty was recently named Australias third top tourist attraction at the Qantas Australian Tourist Awards and visited by a record 500,000 plus people in 2018. Pretty cool huh?

Along with our Project Partners SMC Marine, we've been tasked with adding more flavour to the very end of the Jetty..... by flavour, we mean a food and beverage offerings in the form of a new Pavillion.

Im not sure if you've ventured to Busselton recently, but the locals, businesses and council are getting things done down there. Would put some of the Perth mob to shame. Jump on the Jetty website to take a wander around HERE.

Reconciliation Week 2019

FINESPUN Paul Keating

"It was we who did the dispossessing. We took the traditional lands and smashed the traditional way of life. We brought the diseases. The alcohol. We committed the murders. We took the children from their mothers. We practised discrimination and exclusion. It was our ignorance and our prejudice. And our failure to imagine these things being done to us."

Paul Keatings speech at Redfern 10 Dec 1992 for the Year for the Worlds Indigenous People.... yep thats 27 years ago. Transcript found HERE

Im a fan of Paul Keating, about as much as i love Jeff Kennett - different parties - same characters - willing to put their opinions on the line. Good speech this one too - goes a long way to describe the white mans "i can see its a problem, but m not sure what to do" babble, which i can often find myself in.

Have we progressed? Perhaps his timing was a little late? Because alot of great things (in music) happened a year before this in 1991.

Red Hot Cilli Peppers 'Blood Sugar Sex Magic', Nirvana 'Nevermind', Pearl Jam 'Ten', Massive Attack 'Blue Lines', Soundgarden 'Badmotorfinger', Guns n Roses 'Use Your Illusion', Lenny Kravitz 'Mamma Said' ..... and even NWA Niggaz4Life. Even Michael Jackson and Prince released albums in 1991 - big year for music - look it up. Perhaps it was the stars and planets for progression and Paul was just a year late?

Got me thinking about timing. Timing is everything. Shall i say it again....... everything! Do you think we've travelled very far from what Paul Keating expected 27 years ago? Perhaps he should have delivered it a year earlier.... when all the good things came out.

FINESPUN - 10 Years in Business WOOHOO

FINESPUN Woohoo

In 2019, FINESPUN is now 10 years old. It goes fast. Getting to the 10th birthday mark feels good and comforting - it says you know how to start up, get work, work hard, manage financials and eventually this wisdom turns into business smarts - you now know you can survive in the wild.

This rings true when you see statistics showing about half of new small businesses are dusted in three years. This survival rate continues to drop when only 1 in 3 businesses survived the 10 year mark. Pat on the back to you who have gotten to this mark - the Government should send you a commemorative coin or something.

Ive been invited to join a panel at the third installment of the Australian Consulting Architects - B.o.S.P. Event (Business of Small Practice) with key speaker Warwick Mihaly, Director of Mihaly Slocombe Architects and local Nick Juniper of newly formed outfit The Fulcrum Agency. We get to talk business, how we do it (including the mobile outfit) and how to keep doing it. Something for everyone! Its in Fremantle and tickets are AVAILABLE HERE for 2-5pm Friday 10th May.

For those starting up a new architectural practice, you can read some of Warwick's Paniflo blog on the topic. On a similar note, i can also highly recommend 30X40 Design Workshop You Tube channel enough - super videos on the making of architecture and much much more for architects.

Stop watching Netflix you lazy bastard and click on these links.

Blazing Swan x The FINESPUN Van

Blazing Swan

There is probably nothing more appropriate for the FINESPUN Van than the Blazing Swan Festival, right here in Western Australia;

Blazing Swan is an annual regional Burning Man event held near Jilakin Lake in the Shire of Kulin, Western Australia. It is an experiment in temporary community and artistic expression, and is guided by eleven main principles, including radical inclusion, gifting and radical self-reliance. The event occurs around Easter each year, usually over a period of seven days. The event location is in dry bushland adjacent to Jilakin Lake, and is referred to as Jilakin Rock City. Each year a swan-shaped wooden effigy is built and burned at the culmination of the event.

The FINESPUN Van will be there. You? Get your tickets here; blazingswan.com.au

Yeah FUNI Ha Ha

FINESPUN

Ive ended up in the media a few times due to projects or that random socialite page, which of course is THE pinnacle of anyones life. The kids have now made it a sport of defacing their deadbeat dad. In this one, ive turned into a dragon with VR goggles. Yeah Funny Ha Ha - or should that be FINI Ha Ha?

The background building in this images is Victoria House in Shenton Park - a radially planned former hospital which we are currently imagining adaptive re-use with the FINI Group and the potential of the space to co-exist with the residential development and become a hub for the site and the wider community. There are only a few development personalities who have the guts or foresight to back innovation and change. I think Perth is done with bland, cookie cutter developments which lack soul. I would say Perth is mature enough now (from a design philosophy) to smell bullshit when they see it - just look at the branding and naming of developments for a start. These developers think broader and further into the future - planning and research is critical - you become a leader of the pack and avoid at all costs to follow what others are doing - we get that.

Take for instance the 'Have Your Say' button on the Victoria House project link HERE, where you can register your interest and leave commentary with the developer on whats important to you as a potential buyer. This shows a real concern to get things right, form a genuine community and enables the design team to pick this up early. Right on.

On a side note to multi storey residential developments...... and great news for Perth, the recent run of documents for Design WA has been determined by the Minister for Planning and Stage 1 will become operational on 24 May 2019 - "Design WA aims to create a built environment that reflects the distinctive characteristics of a local area, that enhances streetscapes and neighbourhoods and that contributes to the development of vibrant and liveable communities." - www.dplh.wa.gov.au/designwa

The proof will be in the pudding Perth. Signing off.... Puff the Magic Dragon.

State of the State (and Maylands)

CommSec

Curious? Me too. Its been a while since i commented on the state of affairs local, but its relevant now with the annual CommSec State of the States data found HERE

Its a little daunting to see WA sitting at the bottom of many of the lists on several factors but how else do you understand how our state is fairing amongst the rest of the nation? Mark McGowan says these figures are a little skewed due to the over-performance of the state during the boom times... others talk about the see-saw effect - when the east coast is down, the west coast is high and vice versa..... if you read the media, the east coast is on the way down......

What im more interested in are the signals on your local high street, what do you see? Go for a walk and talk to your local businesses and see whats happening? Here in Maylands there are some mixed sentiments, we've lost some Retail businesses due to several factors however signs are promising so expect to see the openiong of a few additional hospitality venues in 2019 including the Lyric Lane Live Music Venue, Little Shop of Plenty Late Night Licence, The Seasonal Brewing Company and the Old Post Office Wine Bar. These will add to the current successful licensed venues from Swallow Bar and Henry on Eighth. A positive direction for Maylands to inject more night life into the area to activate a place which runs more than 9-5. You should be excited if you are local.

As for the state of our state...... im excited for our suburb and would encourage everyone to question the east coast generated media reports and focus on whats local - with strong local micro-economies they often out perform the state of the state on many factors. Shop local, eat local, drink local. Its your village.
