The Annual Wrap Up - 2018 - Thank You

2018! What a blast! We had some tough deadlines to hit this year which makes you put your head down and get stuck in and then you lift your head and its Xmas!

There's a subtle confident rumble in the WA economy at the moment - we will hit 2019 running again..... or is that driving...... the mobile office @the_finespun_van is complete and ready to roll to your next site or maybe just to the beach - why not eh?.

Robin Hood and His Merry Men

You may know the story or seen the films..... plot goes like this;

"Young Robin Hood, in love with Maid Marian, enters an archery contest with his father at the King's palace. On the way home his father is killed by henchmen of Prince John. Robin takes up the life of an outlaw, gathering together his band of merry men with him in Sherwood Forest, to avenge his father's death and to help the people of the land whom Prince John is over taxing."

I like the idea of a rebel and his merry men - sits well with me. So here i declare my interest as a humble leader of the remote working rebellion in seeking recruits (merry men or women) interested in joining this fine team. WA Good Food Guide

The West Australian Good Food Guide Awards are considered the ultimate celebration of the WA hospitality sector. Did you know there are around 5300 restaurants in Perth?

Id agree with the the West Australian Good Food Guide board member Gail Williams said Perth has come of age - “I am so enthusiastic about what I see around us in Perth at the moment. We have never eaten so well. In many regards 2018 has been an unprecedented year for the rapidly maturing WA restaurant scene.”

The FINESPUN Van - Remote Working

FINESPUN Van

So.... you may have heard. We've gone 'remote'. So what does that mean?

Well simply put, we dont have a bricks and mortar headquarters anymore. We think offices are so 90's and didnt quite suit our lifestyle. See Dave Sharp from Vanity Projects take on this HERE. It wont suit everyone, but we've opted for a different version of work-life balance.

Just like Robin Hood, we have a solid core and small band of merry men (and women) who all enjoy this remote working experience. Some of our team work from home offices (or wherever they please). We dont stick to 9-5, instead we get the work done in the time which suits our lifestyle and allows us to be there for our families and work commitments when needed. We think this is important in todays world, its makes us perform better.

My version? Well im close to finishing my 'mobile office'. A van which i can work out of - ANYWHERE; on building sites; the beach, down south or half way around Australia - ive built this so i can remote work with power from the sun for as long as the sun is shining.

So whats your ideal and why aren't you living it?

My mother passed away from cancer when i was young. Fortunately my brothers generous wife is a nurse, and my mother was able to stay at home until her last breath - which we all witnessed around her bed. The most supreme moment of my life. So of course, im a huge advocate of home care services.

The issue here is being house bound, when all you want to do is get out and chat

Along comes the clever caring folk from Silver Chain..... you may know them from their home care and nursing services they provide. We had the FINE privilege of working on an Australian first health care program Integrum Aged Care+ a new service being trialed by Silver Chain "to support and empower people with complex chronic conditions, keeping them safe at home and out of hospital."

So..... instead of running around all day and sitting in lifeless waiting rooms, Silver Chain Integrum Aged Care+ offers an Australian first service. They pick you up in their own vans, you get to socialise with the other patients and get driven to a facility which has all the right practitioners under one roof. And get this - you dont even need to change rooms - the health care practitioners rotate around the patients! You get to relax in a warm spacious waiting room with access to all the home comforts plus you get to chin wag all you like with anyone else in the room.

We assisted the great team at Total Project Solutions in the Design and Construct projects to deliver two centres ready for the public to access these services. We're very pleased with the outcomes and long list of clients who agree - like HERE.

The Quarter Acre - Suburban Reflections

The Quarter Acre FINESPUN

I grew up in the suburbs. My parents bought a block of land on the outskirts of Melbourne. It was a quarter acre block. It was the Australian dream, and my parents who had arrived from Belfast N.Ireland bought into it. It was cheap land and they could build their own home and have space around them. A luxury for those from Europe who were used to living in townhouses and high density living.

The house was built by AV Jennings - brown bricks and tiled roof. In Victoria, brick veneer was the standard build. All the existing flora and fauna was stripped to create these blocks - some of the old photos show how barren the street was.

I have fond childhood memories of the fringe suburbs, mostly to do with the street life, playing with all the other immigrants kids and my BMX (again). We were a skip away from semi rural land, creeks and farmland. I recall the clearing of a large block for a few new families to build their home - it cut down all the old trees which i knew were the homes of local wildlife - . As you grew up, the suburbs became a place of pure boredom, wasted youth and plenty of trouble. I saw plenty of good people go bad, but geez does it give you a love of good old fashioned mischief.

A long winded tale for the introduction to another refurbishment Tavern project, The Quarter Acre Tavern, a local community based venue which aims to inject this dream into the locale of Applecross, a suburb which could use a little bit of good ol fashioned mischief.

Carousel Tavern FINESPUN

Westfields Carousel is the next cab off the rank for a new entertainment and lifestyle precinct - a open air rooftop area with plenty for the whole family to enjoy. We jumped onto site this week with our team and walked through the construction site.

A little sneak peak at our proposed floor plan for the new Tavern - currently titled The Waverley Brewhouse. Its going to cater for families including all you beer lovers with a nano-brewery on site, some may say bringing the old tavern back! - its been a very tight program (4 weeks to build a Tavern.....) so hold on to your socks!

City of Bayswater - Design Review Panel

Design Review Panel

As a local resident and small business owner, im proud to be selected as a member on the newly formed City of Bayswater Design Review Panel

Many of the larger Councils in Perth have these currently working successfully to assist the Planning Departments assess the merits of Development Approval applications including larger and more complex submissions. The Design Review Panel is comprised of design professionals with expertise in areas suited to the review of complex projects. In my opinion, DRPs provide a low cost method of obtaining expert advice on design and planning essentials to ensure your project is the best it can be - it works particularly well early on in the design process with your own designer / architect.

Meet the Architect - Design on the Go

Patrick Miller Architect

Sandy Anghie has been running a column in the New Homes pull out magazine in the West Australian on the weekends. Anybody who can get the word out on the value of good design is a friend of mine. We had a good chat about all things architecture and Perth - article link found HERE.

Growing up in Broadmeadows Victoria in the 80s was a formative experience living on the fringe of Melbourne - i now have a strong distaste of sprawling suburbia and high volume project homes but a wonderful love of multiculture and nature - we had access to farm land, creeks and a small national park not so far away. The BMX was used heavily!

Perth is in a unique position to learn from the mistakes of our eastern counterparts and do it a hell of a lot better - im a huge fan of infill development, especially around transit stations and high volume roads - id like to think that the use of architects will significantly increase as people try to find unique solutions to tricky sites - heck its what we do best!

From Hospital to Hospitality - Montario Quarter Shenton Park

Last year we had the privilege to work side by side with DKO Architects and Philip Stejskal Architect for one of Perths best developers, Fini Group on the EOI for SIte 38 at Montario Quarter in Shenton Park. You will know them from the highly successful work on the State Heritage buildings in the CBD. We are pleased to share the news the project team was the successful bidder for the property.

We worked on the adaptive re-use portion of the former hospital building 'Victoria House' built in 1938. Our design intent focused on turning the inside-out and breathing in new life with the lightest touch possible. You gotta love it when an old building gets a new lease of life - much like our work at the North Fremantle Town Hall site

Development Director Kyle Jeavons said to The West Australian, "Each of the six wings of the former hospital building will create opportunities for the community to interact over food and drink, house artists’ studios and potentially a future makers-type furniture and homewares outlet."

What another great asset for Perth and a great way to celebrate a former hospital building - especially relevant when all you need is three more letters to turn Hospital into Hospitality!?
